Generally, I liked this book; however the lack of competent copy-editing was a significant distraction. In the first chapter, a couple named “Rogers” leave their home late FRIDAY afternoon to go pot hunting. Several chapters later, it’s said they left late SATURDAY afternoon. Not a little thing when each chapter begins with a different day. Clearly, timing is essential to the story. Next, is it the Rogers or the Rogerses? The author switches back and forth. Stick with Rogers. Also, the phrase is “decibel level”, not “decimal level.” And U.S. magistrate judges don’t set cash bail. That’s not done in the federal system. Little things, but they detract from what seems like a good read.

Skeleton Picnic J D Books Series Michael Norman 9781590586105 Books Reviews

This review is for audiobook version of the second book in the JD Books Mystery Series. The story sets J. D. Books, law enforcement ranger with the Bureau of Land Management against the disappearance of a couple who were digging for antiquities in the Arizona desert.

This is my first foray into this series and I like it. Author Michael Normal pens an interesting and detailed world surrounding the protagonist and creates a believable perfect storm of events that intertwines the reader into the story.

The main character is likeable and believable. Unlike many stories in the genre the various law enforcement types are not fighting in internal turf war. This is a welcomed relief and places the reader on the side of the protagonist searching for the clues and not getting distracted with smaller over-done story lines.

The audiobook is well made and the narrator Patrick Lawlor has an interesting voice that for some reason reminds me of Case Casem. I keep thinking I'm listening to American Top 40 at times. This distraction aside the story is well read and the Lawlor brings the characters to life giving them each a unique voice.

I look forward to reading more from this author and this series.
An interesting and unusual novel. The novel is set in a relatively desolate section of southern Utah. When two long-time and dedicated pot hunters fail to return from a week-end search trip, the alarms go off. The sheriff of the local county turns immediately to the local Bureau of Land Management Ranger, a man named J.D. Books. Although he's a resident and an experienced lawman, J.D. represents evil government to a largely libertarian populace. That only adds to the difficulty he faces in first, tracking down the missing couple and then, when murder stalks into view, chasing down clues, managing an office and his blossoming romance and avoiding becoming the target of successful mayhem.

Tautly written, the plot introduces readers to a handful of interesting characters who are anything but clichés. This is Norman's second adventure mystery for his character, J.D. Books. The author walks a fine line between various competing political attitudes in order to satisfy wider audiences. The way in which he successfully handles a range of views on individual rights and government regulation are interesting, successful, and worthy of examination by fiction writers.

The principal characters are carefully drawn, consistent in their actions and the development of the mystery, its pace and movement, are all satisfying. This is a fine and intriguing mystery that will pleasantly satisfy any reader interested in heritage preservation, land use and the competing rights of individuals. Highly recommended.
The story was pretty good but the writing was pretty amateurish. I look forward to trying another one from this author to see how he progresses.
I enjoyed Michael Norman's J. D. Books Mysteries. The Utah background was interesting as well. The plot building held my attention. Thanks.
Slow reading
A well constructed, engrossing mystery, heavy on investigative procedure (which I like). The tie to American Indian artifacts was well done. Good character development of the main characters. One of the three best mysteries that I read in 2015. I would definitely recommend this one for mystery lovers!
Good book and a fairly accurate description of what a BLM Ranger does. I would like to see more books by Michael Norman with his character J.D. Books. This also accurately showed the problems with archaeological theft and vandalism and how it has been an accepted practice by many generations for a long time. It also highlighted the commercial value of these artifacts and the lengths people are willing to go to market and procure them. Some of JD Book's actions are questionable, and his savvy and law enforcement experience certainly didn't kick in for his final actions that he took. It also highlighted the issues with small town politics and how they can cloud investigations, charges, and prosecutions. Overall, an easy read that made me sorry it ended.
If you like Nevada Barr or Tony Hillerman books, you will probably enjoy these.
