A great new author appears! Always looking for tough, eccentric, believable yet slightly over the top women protagonists and Fina Ludlow is the best I've read in years. Clever plots, great character development and a story line that is funny, sad, emotional, thought-provoking and nuanced. The family dynamic of FIna's crazy, domineering, rich family of lawyers is part of the fun. I will rank Thoft with my current favourites: Michael Conelley, Michael Robotham, Patrick Rothfuss and David Liss. All of whom are very suspenseful, have very interesting characters, and rise above usual. But on this list (Rothfuss is fantasy and Liss historical, the others, mystery) only Thoft has a woman as protagonist. I've now read all 3 of Thoft's book and would recommend all of them. Suggest you read them in order. You really won't want to miss getting to know Fina. (This review is for all 3 of Thoft's books in the Fina Ludlow series.)

First time trying a new author. I was not disappointed. Intricate characters and totally believable plot. Hope the next one is just as intense.
This was a better book than I had thought it would be. Definitely borrows from the Warshawski/Plum playbook, but with a bit more darkness and depth. The main character is a bit of a caricature, but that's typical of the genre. The surrounding cast is interesting and in some cases has more depth than the heroine. The plot line for this one is intensely personal for Fina, the PI,as it involves mostly family members. It will be interesting to see if the author moves out from the family in future books. I'd certainly try another one.
I love Ingrid Thoft's mystery books, I love her writing, the characters and the plots. I've read all 4 of her books, and I'm waiting for book 5 to be published , hopefully soon. This book was great fun .
Good start to what will hopefully be a new series featuring a likeable woman detective in cleverly plotted mysteries with an interesting supporting cast of characters and plenty of atmosphere. I can read books of this genre faster than Sue Grafton, Linda Barnes and Marcia Muller can write them, so I'm always looking for good new entries.

With any luck Ingrid Thoft will keep going, and as she does her heroine's history and personality will become richer and more interesting. In this first book, Josefina Ludlow is a bit of a tough girl cliche, but that was true of Kinsey Milhone, etc. in their series introduction. A promising start.
Look out Kinsey Millhone & Stephanie Plum cause Fina Ludlow is crashing onto the PI scene and I mean LITERALLY crashing onto the scene. I LOVE Fina! She's tough, she carries a gun & not afraid to blow someones balls off, she's kick-ass to the core! Fina's the black sheep of her family, all the Ludlows are ambulance chasing lawyers & Fina's their PI. Growing up with boys, a father who treats her like an employee & a mother who is constantly degrading her, Fena actually has a little sense of morality.

I loved the characters & the plot kept me wanting to come back for more.

I received this book from goodreads in exchange for a review
Fina is a refreshing character—witty, sarcastic, with her own set of moral values. She's unique and her family dynamic is interesting and rare in mystery fiction (the best comparison might be that facing Jane Rizzoli in Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles novels). The pace moves quickly, and as mysteries and thrillers go, the book isn't particularly heavy. But given how many thrillers come out these days, it's nice to find something unique with a character who is the reason for reading.
I purchased this because I had read a review in a magazine and it sounded great- and it did not disappoint. Fina is a PI in Boston, working for a crass personal injury law firm headed by her father and brothers. When her sister in law goes missing, Fina is put to use to help find her, but when looking her disappearance family secrets begin to come to light and family politics come into play. Her family is totally dysfunctional but Fina is a strong character and does her best to navigate while looking for the truth behind the disappearance. As personal injury lawyers, the firm and her family have enemies all over so there's no lack of suspects, both in and around the family. In addition to a decent mystery, there's the theme of parenting and taking care of family and, of course, loyalty. This is the kind of mystery that makes you think and reflect on your own family. An excellent first novel, a quick read and difficult to put down. This is closer to noir than cozy.
